Job Description
The Contemplative Sciences Center (CSC) at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for an Assistant/Associate Director of Programs for the Contemplative Commons. The Assistant/Associate Director will provide leadership, supervision, and guidance to ensure the programs effectively meet the needs of the university community.

We pursue this mission through a variety of programs and initiatives in academic classrooms, residential life, research, scholarship, and social innovation. The CSC understands flourishing as thriving in all aspects of one's life (social, emotional, cognitive, physical, professional, and spiritual) and contributing to the thriving of others.
Key Responsibilities
Programs & Operations
- Lead the development, design, curation, and implementation of mission-aligned activities, programs, and events led by the Contemplative Sciences Center (CSC). Spearhead strategic initiatives aligned with CSC and UVA objectives to enhance student life and engagement and animate the Contemplative Commons.
- Be a presence in the Contemplative Commons; work in the building, become deeply familiar with the building and its environment, remain curious about activities, events, and programs hosted in the building.
- Facilitate the integration of activities, programs, events, and services offered by partners within the University community at the Contemplative Commons.
- Facilitate the integration of activities, programs, events, and services offered by and for the broader Charlottesville & Albemarle County community at the Contemplative Commons.
- Collaborate with the Research Team to facilitate and implement a contemplative education-research program that promotes student flourishing.
- Work with the Operations Team to support daily operations, ensure studios, classrooms, event spaces, lounges, and specialized rooms are prepared for uses
Management and Supervision
- Oversee a team of undergraduate and graduate student workers charged with daily operations and programmatic responsibilities at the Contemplative Commons. Provide guidance, support, and mentorship to ensure the smooth functioning of the facility and successful implementation of programs.
- Hire, train, evaluate, and offer professional development opportunities for student workers to foster growth within their roles and prepare them for success post-graduation.
- Manage the pool of wage employees and vendors who provide contemplative programming in the Contemplative Commons and for the CSC, including hiring, scheduling, evaluating, and facilitating compensation.
- Establish clear expectations and objectives for student workers and wage employees/vendors to ensure alignment with the Contemplative Commons and CSC's overall success.
- Clearly communicate goals, responsibilities, and performance metrics and provide regular feedback and support to student workers and wage employees/vendors.
Marketing
- Represent the Program Team in collaboration with the Communications Team to develop marketing and communication standards, strategies, and practices to elevate the Commons as a differential space on Grounds.
- Collaborate with the Communications Team to implement a dynamic and engaging strategy both online and in-person for marketing of activities, programs, and events to the UVA community and with the broader Charlottesville and international community, as appropriate.
Administration
- Manage the budget and expenditures management for activities, programs, and events while ensuring financial transparency and accountability.
- Assess activities, programs, and events for efficacy, impact, and progress towards intended outcomes.
- Utilize assessment and reporting to inform data-driven decision-making and develop short- and long-term strategies for programming, marketing, and team development.
Minimum Requirements
Assistant Director Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Master's degree.
- Experience: At least three years of experience. Additional experience can substitute for this Masters requirement.
Associate Director Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Master's degree
- Experience: At least five years of experience.
Preferred Experience:
- Preferred Experience: 3-5 years of work experience in a higher education environment specializing in student well-being or wellness programming.
- Desired Experience: 2 years of contemplative practice or training (e.g., yoga teacher training, mindfulness certification, established personal practice).
Physical Demands: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require attendance for meetings, programs, and events after hours.
This position is In-Person located in Charlottesville, VA.
The anticipated start date is ASAP.
This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance.
Assistant Director Anticipated Hiring Range: $65,000 - $75,000 commensurate with education and experience.
Associate Director Anticipated Hiring Range: $80,000 - $85,000 commensurate with education and experience.
