This workshop, led by Karolyn Kinane, Associate Director of Pedagogy and Faculty Engagement at the Contemplative Sciences Center, is geared for college instructors who have a contemplative practice or who have been practicing contemplative pedagogy. It offers a reflective framework to center contemplative processes in support of critical thinking, creative expression, problem solving, and ethical action.
We ask that participants in this workshop be prepared to engage in reflection, small group discussion, and large group share about a) what a focus on contemplative processes rather than practices might do for our pedagogy and b) what care for transformation at individual, interpersonal, and systemic levels might do for our pedagogy. We will co-generate a list of contemplative processes and reflect on the connections between contemplative pedagogy and other liberatory pedagogies.
This workshop’s framework is rooted in three imperatives to resist dominant cultural modes: 1) waking up from auto-pilot 2) valuing beings for more than what they produce 3) offering experiences of interconnectedness. More descriptive than prescriptive, this workshop foregrounds contemplative pedagogy as a way for folks to come into their own wisdom and invites comments, critique, and further development from participants.
For folks looking for a basic introduction to contemplative pedagogy or who are not prepared to engage in reflection upon the relationship between their contemplative practice and teaching, we will offer an Introduction to Contemplative Pedagogy June 1 via Zoom. Details to come.
